Windsor/Stew-Stras softball (#1 seed), the reigning 2018 Class A State Champs, reigns as the 2019 NTC Tourney champion after beating South Central on Friday in 5 innings, 10-0.
South Central was the #3 seed coming in, but they upset the #2 seed St. Anthony in the semifinal, 6-4. That got them a date with the undefeated Hatchets (29-0-1).
Megan Schlechte threw a 3-hit, shutout with one walk and 4 Ks. She faced 19 batters and threw 1st pitch strikes to 12 of them. She threw 37 strikes and 16 balls. Schlechte also went 3-for-3 with a double and 3 runs scored with 4 RBIs.
WSS out-hit South Central 11 to 3 and had 3 doubles from Carson Cole, Hannah Hayes and Schlechte the first 3 batters in the line-up on the scorecard. The #4 hitter, Mackenzi Tabbert had a 2-run, home run. SC had one double.
The Cougars never got any traction after a leading off the game with a double. Two ground outs and a K. held them scoreless.
Back-to-back doubles by Hayes and Schlechte in the 1st gave them the winning run, 1-0. Tabbert walked. With two outs, Karlie Bean walked to load the bases and Ava Bennett stroked an RBI single, 2-0.
A ground out to Bean at shortstop, another Schlechte K and a pop out to Bennett at 2nd put SC down in order in the 2nd.
WSS got a boost in the 2nd. Cole walked with one out and stole 2nd. With one out, Schlechte singled Cole across, 3-0. Tabbert crushed the first pitch for a 2-run home run, 5-0.
A ground out to bean and one to Schlechte was followed by a pop out to Katrina Davis at 1st for another 3-up, 3-down SC inning in the 3rd. SC turned a double play after Bennett walked, to hold WSS in the 3rd.
SC got two base runners in the 4th. Roney threw out the first batter then a single and a walk gave SC a chance to score. A dropped 3rd strike got the 2nd out, but runners did not advance. A fielder's choice, Roney to bean ended the SC chance.
WSS struck back with extreme prejudice. Davis led off the 4th walking and stealing 2nd. Cole doubled her home. Hayes singled and Schlechte hit a 2-run single. Schlechte stole 2nd and got to 3rd on an error on the play.
Tabbert singled her in, 9-0. Roney singled, but no one scored. the naext bater lined-out and the last batter lined into a double play, denying a 10-run lead.
Schlechte ran g up the first batter of the SC 5th and gave up a single. She threw out the next batter at 1st. Bean threw out the last SC batter of the day.
Maddy Pfeiffer led off the WSS 5th with a single.Natalie Hayes ran for her and stole 2nd. Davis reached on an error, putting Hayes at 3rd. With no outs, Cole was at bat and Natalie Hayes scored for the sudden death win.
WSS (29-0-1) plays Nokomis at Stew-Stras on Monday and it will be Senior Day for the State Champs.
