Windsor/Stew-Stras girls basketball (16-12) got beat by 18 points in the last meeting with North Clay. On Thursday, they came within 2 points shy of a huge rematch upset, losing 49-47.

WSS erased 16 points from the margin two weeks ago, when North Clay won in the NTC Tournament. The hatchets matched the 1st period North Clay push and the score was tied after 8:00, 17-17.

In the previous meeting North Clay had a 15-9 run to start the game. WSS cut the lead to four at the half and stayed close in the 3rd to trail by just 3. In the 4th, the WSS wheels came off, as North Clay had a 15-1 run.

In the rematch 2nd, the wear and tear gave North Clay an 11-7 edge at the half, 28-24. The Hatchets reversed that dynamic in the 3rd with an 11-8 run to trail by just one point heading into the valley of decision. North Clay emerged from the fire and smoke of the 4th with a 13-12 advantage, escaping with a 2-point win.

In the 1st meeting, WSS post Mikala Nichols had just 6 points. This time, she scored 14 points. Nichols shot 70% from inside the arc in this game. She grabbed 15 boards for another double-double. She also led the team with 7 steals.

Hannah Hayes led WSS last time with 16 points. This time she had 18. She shot 50% from inside the arc and made one triple. She was 3-of-5 at the line. she had 2 steals.

Natalie Hayes scored 7 points. She had 2 in the previous meeting. She shot 50%, making 2 twos and her only 3 attempt. She had 2 steals.

Without Madison Lovett’s 24 points, WSS would have had their comeback. Lovett canned 4 treys and 4 twos and made 4 free throws. Allsion Czyzewski scored 10 points.

WSS had 21 buckets, 2 from the arc for 44 points from the floor. North Clay had 18 buckets, 6 from the arc for 42 points from the floor. WSS had the advantage this game by 2 points. But, North Clay made 7-of-10 free throws and WSS shot just 6 free throws and made 3, a 4-point edge in a 2-point game.
