Windsor/Stew-Stras junior high softball was down to Mattoon, 4-3, in the bottom of the 7th. Samantha Hayes hit a 2-out, RBI-single to tie the game, 4-4. Then Alaira Friese hit a 2-out, walk-off single, driving in Gabby Vonderheide for the win, 5-4.

Stacie Vonderheide pitched for the Trojans and went all 7 innings, allowing 4 runs on 9 hits with zero walks and 5 Ks. Mattoon’s pitcher, Collins went 6 the distance, 6 and 2/3 innings, allowing 5 runs, 11 hits, 2 walks and striking out just 2.

The duo of Hayes and Friese went for 6-of-8 in the middle of the order. Hayes was 3-of-4 with a run and an RBI, reaching base all four times. Friese was 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Gabby Vonderheide was 2-for-3 with a walk and the winning run. Ella Kinkelaar was 1-for-4 with a double and a run.

The lead see-sawed back and forth. WSS led 1-0 and Mattoon caught them. Mattoon led 2-1, then WSS went up 3-2. Mattoon countered 4-3. WSS then got two runs in the final bat to reclaim the lead and win.

Vonderheide rang up two batters in the 1st. Kinkelaar then led off the game for WSS with a double. Stacie Vonderheide sac bunted Kinkelaar to 3rd. She scored on a fielder’s choice by Addie Wernsing, 1-0. Collins KO’d 2.

Mattoon had 2 singles in the 2nd a sac bunt and a score on a ground out, 1-1. Vonderheide threw a K with a runner on 3rd. Hayes and Friese singled in the 2nd, but were stranded.

A single, a ground out, and a single gave Mattoon the 2-1 lead in the 3rd. Gabby Vonderheide walked in the WSS 3rd, but was left on. Mattoon go a double in the 4th, but didn’t score.

Hayes reached on an error in the WSS 4th and Friese singled. Marisa daniels reached on a fielder’s choice to load the bases. Ellie Wittenberg bunt singled and Hayes scored for the tie, 2-2.

With no outs, the bases were still loaded. A hit to the pitcher was an out. Stacie Vonderheide singled and Friese scored for the lead, 3-2. A double play pulled the plug.

In the 5th, A 1-out triple and a fielder’s choice tied the score, 3-3.With two outs, a single gave Mattoon the 4-3 lead. Gabby V and Hayes singled in the WSS 5th, but Gabby was out stealing and Hayes was stranded. Mattoon got a single in the 6th and Stacie V threw a K.

WSS went in order in the 6th and Mattoon went in order in the 7th, setting up the walk-off win.
